Needle Punch Technology

Needle-punched nonwoven fabrics are made from various fibrous webs (carded webs) in which staple fibres are bonded together mechanically through fibre entanglement and frictions after fine needle barbs repeatedly penetrated through the fibrous web. Needle-punched fabrics have characteristic periodicities in their structural architecture that result from the interaction of fibres with the needle barbs. Fibre segments are reorientated and migrated from the surface of the web towards the interior of the fabric, forming pillars of fibre orientated approximately perpendicular to the plane.

The fibre dimensions and types used in needle-punched fabric are versatile, depending on their application requirements. Fibres of certain ranges of lengths ,fibre diameters, their cross section  are classfied according to the final applications. Fibres used in needle-punched fabrics might also be required to have thermal resistance to high temperature, flame retardancy, chemical resistance, and abrasion resistance.

Fabric density of needled filter could be controlled through needle-punching parameters, such as needling density and penetration depth; many needle-punched nonwoven filters are made of multiple layer structures including various needled nonwoven fibrous layers and reinforcement layers (scrim, woven fabric, lightweight spunbond nonwovens, etc.) to achieve required parameters, compactness, dimension stability, and mechanical robustness.

The performance of needle-punched fabric, including filtration efficiency, pressure drop, operational life, cleaning performance, dust cake formation, and mechanical and chemical resistance, are influenced by its fibre sizes, fabric porosity, thickness, and fabric permeability, however; they can be refined and enhanced with surface treatment and protective finishes for diverse applications. The surface finishes include felting, calendering, and glaze singeing, and the protective finishing includes antistatic, antiadhesive, and antiabrasive finishes, flame resistance, chemical resistance, and water-repellent coating and impregment. When the fabrics are finished with coating, calendering, or glaze singeing, the overall improvement of their characteristics are mainly determined by the calendering, singeing, and coating parameters.

Needle-punched filters have a wide range of fabric specifications between 50g/m2 up to over 1500g/m2; their thicknesses are in the range of 0.5 mm up to 12 mm, depending on applications.
